News & Announcements | OCTOBER is Domestic Violence Awareness & National Bullying Prevention Month
Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign
In working with students at the Western Montgomery Career and Technology Center, the TCN S.A.F.E (Supporting Abuse Free Environments) Program designed and constructed wooden silhouettes of women, men and children representing victims of domestic violence. Personal testimonies, statistical information on domestic violence, and resources for help are posted on these wooden silhouettes. The silhouettes have appeared at area events and businesses including the Coventry Mall, Pottstown Cluster of Religious Communities, High Street Music Company, Pottstown Library, Gallery on High, the NOVA Conference in Philadelphia, the Healthy Lifestyles Expo, the Penn State 4H Fair, Women’s Center of Montgomery County Taking Steps to End Abuse 5kWalk/Run, and TCN Membership Meetings. The silhouettes will also be at the Domestic Violence Symposium at Cabrini College on October 4th, Open Line Task Force Meeting on October 5th, Laurel House 5K DASH on October 23rd, and other events throughout the year. If you would like to include the silhouettes at your business or event, please contact TCN at 610-705-3301, Ext. 2 or safe@tcnetwork.org.

Safe Dating Play “Mirror, Mirror”
Unhealthy relationships can start at a young age. The SAFE (Supporting Abuse Free Environments) Committee of the TriCounty Community Network (TCN) has created a program to help spread awareness of domestic violence issues to area high school students and help them recognize warning signals in order to prevent violence before it occurs.
In 2008, a safe-dating play titled “Mirror, Mirror” was created and performed by Pottsgrove High School students with the help of play-write Aileen McCulloh under the direction of Todd Kelly, Pottsgrove High School English teacher and Drama Director. The play has since been performed in many locations throughout the TriCounty area. Each performance is followed by a professionally-led discussion about the issues presented in the play as well as how to get help if they or a friend or loved-one needs assistance.
The SAFE Committee presented a special workshop at the 37th Annual NOVA(The National Organization for Victim Assistance) Conference held in Philadelphia, Pa. on August 14-17, 2011.
The workshop included a presentation of the “Mirror, Mirror” safe-dating play. TCN’s goal was to show other organizations at the conference how to replicate the play and facilitator-led discussions.
TCN is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, membership-based organization that partners with nonprofits, businesses and community members to improve health, social and environmental conditions. Serving Western Montgomery, Northern Chester and Eastern Berks counties in Pennsylvania, TCN offers seven key programs: Build Up Youth, C.A.R.E. (Caring in Alternative Residential Environments), Environmental Awareness, Family Literacy, Homeless Services, S.A.F.E. (Supporting Abuse Free Environments), and Workforce Development. For more information on TCN or the “Mirror, Mirror” performances, please contact Jen Doyle at TriCounty Community Network at 610-705-3301.
